Our Services

Community Mentoring

Supporting young people (14-26) living in areas of deprivation. Many are young residents of housing associations.

PRESET meets with each young person to talk about his / her current situation, interests and ambitions. Each young person is matched with a volunteer Mentor, who acts as a role model and is there to offer 1-2-1 support and guidance. Young people also improve personal and career skills through a tailored group training programme designed to meet the needs of the group.

PRESET runs 6 projects in Ealing, Hackney, Islington, Newham, Westminster, Slough and has delivered projects in Lambeth and Southampton.

Employable Communities

1-2-2 mentoring support is combined with career-focused training that will increase awareness of further education opportunities, address key skills relating to employability, such as applying for jobs and interview techniques.

Where possible, young people will be matched with Mentors who work in sectors of interest or who have experience of these fields. There is also an opportunity for work and college tasters.

PRESET runs Employable Communities in Southall and Newham funded by the European Social Fund, London Borough of Newham and the London East LSC.

YJB Back on Track

Funded by the Youth Justice Board for 3 years (2001 - 2004) PRESET is running two pojects in Ealing and Islington providing 1-2-1 mentoring plus basic skills including literacy, numeracy, IT and ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) to young offenders and young people at risk of offending. The projects target 10 - 17 year olds and we are working closely with the Youth Offending Teams in both boroughs.

PRESET Leadership Programme

Equipping young people (16-26) with skills that increase leadership abilities to enhance career prospects. In 2002, PRESET will be running a Leadership initiative for people employed at junior and middle management levels to improve their chances of career progression.

Training includes sessions on:
Leadership Awareness
Time & Human Resources Management

Team and Confidence Building
Equal Opportunities

Effective Communication
Presentation Skills

The Connect Outreach Project
Making contact with young people on the brink of exclusion and linking them with relevant support to help them back into the mainstream and accessing opportunities many take for granted.

Basic Life Skills
PRESET is developing our Basic Life Skills provision, including support in literacy, numeracy and IT, as well as behaviour management.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
PRESET works with diverse communities, and several of our young people need support in improving their English language skills. We offer ESOL support to small tutor groups, focusing on improving communication skills.

Future Projects

The PRESET Leadership Institute
PRESET is developing a Leadership Institute that will offer quality training to three distinct client groups: Management and professional personnel, people working in the community and secondary school pupils. Training will be targeted to develop the leadership potential of participants, boosting career prospects. Training will combine a series of seminars delivered by leading professionals with job shadowing and work placement opportunities. The Institute will primarily, but not exclusively, target those from the ethnic minority communities.

A pilot Leadership project will be launched in autumn 2003 and will work with a group of 12 trainees, who have been nominated for this course by their employers, as part of their commitment to staff development.

Overseas Development
PRESET is planning to share our expertise to support developing countries. Our plan is to run a project in Namibia for young children of primary school age. Supported by the High Commissioner for Namibia, Monica Nashandi, PRESET is working to build relationships with key agencies in the country, to lay the foundations of a dynamic project that has sustainability at its core.

Our immediate tasks are to carry out a research exercise in Namibia, establish partnerships and identify funding to enable us to carry out and sustain this exciting piece of work.

PRESET is also planning to launch an English language training and capacity building project in Sri Lanka. We shall be setting up an English language project, which will be delivered by a qualified tutor from England. In addition, local people will be trained to teach English and a resource library of materials set up, to enable the project to continue in future years. Capacity building of local people is essential to delivering a project that will be sustainable and for local communities to eventually take ownership in the delivery of the provision.

Work is underway to consolidate partnerships and raise sufficient funds and we hope to start the project in April 2003.
