Community Mentoring

Community Mentoring is Preset’s widest spread activity. In 2004/5 there were 262 volunteer Mentors on the register, with 57% being from ethnic origins other than White British.

Employable Communities

Employable Communities works through combining mentoring support with a needs-led employability training programme for young people between the ages of 16 and 24. Preset has run such a project in West London, where 21 young people moved into employment or work placements compared with a target of 12. A similar scheme in Newham has resulted in:
 
143 young people recruited onto the programme
60 young people have received personal development training
65 young people now have up to date CVs.
37 young people have been supported to gain employment and work experience
94 young people have received one to one advice and guidance from trained volunteer Mentors
70 Mentors have been successfully recruited, screened and trained by PRESET.

Back on Track

Back on Track is a mentoring programme with the additional provision of Key Skills and ESOL support. It targets young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET), young offenders and those at risk of offending. As well as academic skills, it aims to develop personal skills through support by project staff, and off site life training at residential activity weekend courses.

In 2004/5 Back on Track projects in Ealing and Islington have:
 
Engaged 50 young people between the ages of 10 and 13
Provided Basic Skills and ESOL support for 37 young people
Supported 3 young people into work
Worked in partnership with the Education Services to help 7 excluded pupils back into school.
 
 The Connect Project (Haringey)

This project started in October 2000, and has steadily increased so that it now includes:
 
Outreach services to link young people back into education, employment and training
Key Skills (OCR accredited) training in literacy, numeracy and ICT support
ESOL (Trinity ESOL accredited) training for those where English is not their mother tongue
Employability and job search support
Peer mentoring

Leadership Programme

This is a personal and professional development training programme. It develops the potential of those young people, who are likely to become tomorrow’s leaders.  It targets:
 
Managers and Professional Personnel
Those working in local communities
Young secondary school pupils

In 2004/5 PRESET teamed up with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, to deliver a Leadership programme for Housing Association employees, nominated and sponsored by their respective employers.
